Hello Lunch Break. My niece sent me a picture headed out for her first day of school. New school. Freshman year. And, let’s just say lots of excitement. I am waiting for our next call to ask about the homework. For whatever reason, I feel like my freshman year the work really ratcheted up a notch. It felt like it took hours to do when I got home. Looking back, I see the skill it built in me. The real lesson of at least most of it. But gosh knows in it, it just felt a real drag. And, there’s something about the most basic tasks in AEO that if I’m being honest feel like homework. I know what business owners need in the AI era and yet it’s hard to convey the immediate value. I’m referring to something called schema and it’s what I’m talking about this week.

Alright. Clock's ticking. Back to work.
THE GAME CHANGED
Schema Didn't Move The Needle On 1,885 Pages
Ahrefs found 1,885 pages that added schema for the first time between August 2025 and March 2026, matched each one against three control pages that never added any, and measured citations for thirty days. They concluded it moved nothing.

And yet, while the numbers are real it isn't the whole story. Across six million URLs, pages cited by AI were about three times more likely to carry schema, and 53 percent of cited pages have it. Ahrefs looked for cause instead of correlation and found that the sites bothering with schema are the same sites publishing better, maintaining more, and earning more links. Strip the schema out and the rest of the good work still carries the page.
A separate searchVIU test shows the mechanism. They built a page where each product's price sat in a different place, then asked five systems what the prices were. The price that lived only inside schema was found by none of them.
Here’s what matters more than the finding. Every page in the Ahrefs sample already had 100 or more AI Overview citations before the schema went on, so this measures pages the engines had already found. Ahrefs says outright it cannot speak to pages that aren't being cited at all, and that is most local businesses reading this. searchVIU's test covers direct fetch only, and they flag that schema is very likely read at the indexing stage, which is where Google AI Overviews and Bing Copilot both operate.

THE WINDOW IS NOW
A Freshman Needs Homework
Your website needs schema like a freshman needs homework. The value of both might not be noticeable until you start getting jobs.
Google's Search team said in April 2025 that schema gives an advantage in search results. Fabrice Canel at Microsoft Bing confirmed in March 2025 that schema helps Microsoft's models understand content for Copilot. Two platforms have said it on the record.
Schema is the one place you state your facts directly instead of hoping an engine infers them from a paragraph. Your category. Your service area. The five services you sell, marked one at a time rather than described in a list. Who owns the business and which profiles belong to it. Every other fact about you on the open web has to be interpreted by something.
Why the window is open right now: this is the only piece of the work that doesn't depend on anybody else. Source coverage takes a quarter and needs other people to write about you. Reviews need customers. Local press needs an editor to say yes. Schema takes an afternoon, costs nothing, and is finished when you say it's finished.
Generate yours here. Five blocks, picks the right subtype for your category, and it runs in your browser so nothing gets sent anywhere.

YOUR COMPETITORS ARE ASLEEP
The Report Went Live And Nobody Opened It
On August 31 Google finished a months long rollout and switched on the AI performance reports in Search Console for every account worldwide. Impressions, pages, countries, devices, dates, covering how your site performs inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. It's free, it's already in an account you probably already have, and the number of local business owners who have opened it is close to zero.

What to do about it: log in, find the AI section, and look at which of your pages carry impressions inside AI answers. Then compare that list against the pages you thought were doing the work. Most owners find those are two different lists, and the gap is your homework.
Note: There's no click data in the report, so it tells you where you appeared and not what it earned you. Google disclosed no share of queries. And every number in it describes Google's surfaces only, which means it tells you nothing at all about ChatGPT or Perplexity.

WHAT’S THE PROMPT
Grade Your Own Homework
If the AI engines read visible text and skip the hidden stuff, what facts would it know about your business?
This prompt will tell you what can and cannot be determined from your website.
Everything it couldn't determine is a fact you have never stated. If it couldn't name your service area, no engine can.
Anything it marked as belonging in visible copy needs to be added to your website. That's the part the engines read at fetch, which is what I reference at the top of this issue.
Anything it marked as structured data goes in the generator. Hours, address, subtype, the profile list, the individual services. Those are the facts a customer doesn't need in a sentence and a machine does.
Then paste the paragraph it wrote you under your H1. If it came back full of [MISSING], you know what else you need to do this month.
Generate the markup, then validate it. Both free, that’s your homework.

CITED
It Knew They Were Open All Night. It Called Five Other Companies.

I asked ChatGPT to tell me about Odyssey Mechanical in Wilmington and to cite a source for every fact. It did, and almost every source was Odyssey's own website. What they do across HVAC, plumbing, electrical and gas. A published service area list running from Atkinson to Wrightsville Beach. Founded in 2017, with the BBB used only to cross check the date. And this, sourced to Odyssey: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for emergencies.
Then I opened a fresh chat and asked the way a person actually asks. My AC died at 9pm on a Saturday in Wilmington NC, who can come out tonight. Five companies came back. AC Cycle, Air Support, Brand Air, United Mechanical Solutions and NC Quality Air. Odyssey was not one of them.
Here's why. ChatGPT told me what it was doing. It said it found companies advertising 24/7 emergency service tonight. Not the best rated. Not the most reviewed. The ones that say the words. Odyssey holds 1,001 Google reviews at 4.9 and is listed open 24 hours. It lost this question to companies with a fraction of that, and the difference isn't quality, it's vocabulary.
What the named companies have. Air Support runs a separate emergency HVAC page for Surf City, and another for Hampstead, and more for Topsail Beach, North Topsail Beach and Holly Ridge. AC Cycle says 24 hours 7 days a week on the front of its site and has HVAC in its domain. NC Quality Air has a page called Emergency HVAC Services. Odyssey has an emergency page too, and it's called Emergency Home Services, covering four trades at once. Break it out, say it clearly, and they’ll get cited.
See you next Thursday.
