Hello Lunch Break. Hobby Lobby has the Christmas trees up. It is the third week of August and I mean the school buses just came back on the road this week. Both seasons are here and I’m still in summer.
Retail does this because the decision happens long before the purchase does. Nobody buys a tree in August. But the person who walks past a lit tree in August is forced to think about December so by the time they're ready to buy, Hobby Lobby has been considered and gets the purchase. Yes, I hate it. I’m also a marketer. And, I know it’s as much of a race to be chosen for your tree purchase this season as it is for you to be cited and mentioned in AI for your business’ product or service.
And, that's the whole issue this week. I’m sharing just how early and how quietly those decisions get made in AI search, and how fast they come apart when the platform changes its mind. One site lost 86 percent of its citations in ChatGPT in a single week.
Alright. Clock's ticking. Back to work.

THE GAME CHANGED
Reddit Lost 86 Percent Of Its ChatGPT Citations In A Week
Are your clients using ChatGPT to find you? Pay attention.
PromptWatch tracked Reddit at an average 3.83 percent of all ChatGPT Search citations from July 18 through August 7. Then, out of nowhere, it fell. By August 14 through 17 it was 0.52 percent, an 86.4 percent drop, and it has stayed there.

On August 8, ChatGPT also started scoping its background searches to single domains at scale, running queries like site:reddit.com best dentist wilmington.

Those went from 0.37 percent of its background searches to 16.8 percent in one day, and the number of searches it runs per answer nearly doubled, from about 1.08 to 1.83.
What to do about it: stop asking whether you rank and start checking to see which domains you live on. If ChatGPT is deciding to go check one specific site before it searches, the only question that matters is whether it's checking a site you're on and whether you're information is correct there. That’s for Google Business Profile, Yelp, the BBB, Angi, Nextdoor, and whatever the directory is for your trade.
A platform that sends you citations can stop overnight. This study proves it, which is why there’s always an argument for diversification.

THE WINDOW IS NOW
Your Visibility Is A Probability
Run the same buying question five times and you can get five different answers. That is why a screenshot of one answer, good or bad, tells you almost nothing. Aleyda Solis puts the standard for measurement in one line: if a metric can't change a decision, it shouldn't be on the dashboard.
Why the window is open right now: the thing that survives dramatic shifts in AI is not your page copy. It's how many independent sources describe your business correctly, in the words your customers use. The businesses that get named consistently next spring are the ones adding sources this fall.

YOUR COMPETITORS ARE ASLEEP
The Local Publication Beats The National Placement
Press Ranger and OtterlyAI published a joint study on August 20 covering 129.3 million citations across more than 20 million cited URLs on seven AI platforms in June, matched against 91 confirmed licensing agreements between AI companies and publishers.
Here’s what you need to remember: News is only 7.2 percent of everything AI cites, so the press placement everyone is chasing is competing for a thin slice to begin with.
Inside that slice, publishers holding an OpenAI licensing deal collected 10.2 citations per page on ChatGPT against 6.9 citations for unlicensed publishers. A 48 percent premium. Publishers who signed with OpenAI and nobody else earned 112 percent more. You cannot buy that. Neither can your competitor.

The opportunity you can act on is here. Across 16 US industries, niche and trade outlets, most of them unlicensed, carried the majority of news citations in 15 of them, and collected 213 percent more AI citations than mainstream media. This advantage is real and nobody is competing for it.
What to do about it: the Wilmington business journal, the regional trade association newsletter, the local homeowners' publication, the niche blog somebody in your industry reads on purpose. Those beat a national placement, and they will take your call. Being written about in a cited outlet is how you end up in the answer.

WHAT’S THE PROMPT
Ask The Same Question Five Ways
Everyone tests their citations by typing "best [my category] in [my city]" once, seeing the answer, and drawing a conclusion from it. The clearer story is to ask the same buying intent five different ways, the way five different customers would, and count how many name you.
Then read your score, because the score tells you which problem you have.
Four or five out of five. You're in the conversation. Defend it. Keep the sources that are naming you fed and correct.
Two or three out of five. This is where the easiest wins are, and most businesses land here. You're already credible enough to get named sometimes, so the gap is which specific questions you're missing. Look at the three formulations that dropped you and write the page that answers each one directly.
Zero or one out of five. Do not rewrite your homepage. A zero is almost never a copy problem. It means not enough independent sources describe what you do, and that's the source coverage work I discussed above.
Want this run across every question your customers ask instead of five? That's what our audit does. Start with the audit.

Twenty Photographers. The One That Won The Real Question Wasn't On Any Other List.
AI Says: Chris Lang Photography and KMI Photography, Wilmington
I opened five fresh ChatGPT chats and asked for a Wilmington wedding photographer five different ways. First "best wedding photographer in Wilmington NC." Then "how do I choose a wedding photographer in Wilmington NC, and who are the top options." Then a location ask: "we're getting married at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington NC next spring. Who photographs weddings there." Then "our first choice is already booked, who else should we look at." And last, "what should we watch out for when booking a wedding photographer in Wilmington NC, and which local photographers do people recommend."
Twenty studios got named across the five. Three survived all of them: Lightbloom Photography, Storyteller Adams, and KMI Photography. But the venue question, the fourth phrasing in that list and the only one that describes an actual wedding, was topped by Chris Lang Photography, which had not appeared in a single one of the other four. ChatGPT didn't reach for WeddingWire to find it. It cited Chris Lang's own site, because Chris Lang has an Airlie Gardens page.

But here’s who you should copy. KMI did both. It went five for five on the broad questions and came second on the venue question, because its own site carries a page for Airlie Gardens, a separate page for Lebanon Chapel, and a Wilmington venue guide. Compare that to The Joyner Company, which made every general shortlist and then vanished the moment a venue was named. Being on WeddingWire and The Knot is what gets you onto the list. The recognition. Writing the page about the specific place your customer named is what puts you at the top of the only question that ends with somebody booking. The recommendation.
Worth remembering. Chris Lang won the question but lost the category: one venue page is not a strategy by itself, which is why the studio worth copying here is KMI.
See you next Thursday.
